SB550, the Preventing Lead in Drinking Water bill, was passed by the Illinois House on Monday with a vote of 108-1. The Senate passed a concurrence vote today unanimously. The bill will soon go to the governor for his signature. The bill will require every unique drinking water source in every Illinois school (public, private, and parochial) to be tested for lead and will require families to be notified should high lead levels be found.
This bill has been a key issue for Illinois PTA, one of our focus topics at Illinois PTA Advocacy Day in Springfield on November 15, 2016, and a targeted bill for the current lame duck session. Illinois PTA thanks every PTA advocate who contacted their legislator through our campaign to help make school drinking water safer for every schoolchild in Illinois. Together, we have made a difference in the lives of millions of Illinois children.
Local PTAs make a difference for the children at their schools every day, but PTAs can have a greater impact when they advocate for laws that benefit all children.
