Notification & Procedures for School Closings (& Weather Warnings)

School Cancellation Notification

Last year the Federal Communications Commission had changed its regulations and would no longer allow us to call home when school was closed for weather unless given permission. We sent instructions about logging in to the School Messenger Notification System’s InfoCenter to update your phone permissions. Well the FCC regulations have changed once again.

Under the revised regulations, the FCC recognizes a weather-related closing (such as a snow day) as an emergency. Therefore, District 54 will once again be calling parents and staff members if we were to close for a snow day. We have reset the SchoolMessenger settings to make this the default setting. District 54’s procedure during a Wind Chill Warning and Wind Chill Advisory

A warning is typically issued by the National Weather Service when the wind chill will be -30 degrees Fahrenheit or colder OR the actual air temperature is -15 degrees Fahrenheit. When a warning is issued, classes and extracurricular activities will be cancelled. During a wind chill advisory, we will have class, but students will be kept inside for recess, PE, etc.
